Novel Research

How much research do you usually do before writing a novel? I’m sure it depends on the genre, but maybe not.

For me personally, I don’t usually do any research before writing a novel. It doesn’t matter the genre, though I’ve only really tried fantasy, contemporary, and YA. A book of essays or something more… research-based, for lack of a better term, would probably merit a little bit more, but I’m a pantser in the worst way. Nothing But NaNo (Hah.)

I’ve decided to do nanowrimo this month. I have exactly 249 words. So naturally I’m writing a blog post instead of a novel.

I’m just not feeling it. Too many people. Too much to do. Season two of Stranger Things. All the procrastination. And I’m already so far behind, will I ever really catch up? Let’s be real. No, I won’t. Because this month just keeps getting busier. So my personal goal is 20k. It’s just not the same without being able to meet a goal on paper, you know? On SMART Goals and Procrastination

Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you had everything you wanted? The perfect job, the perfect house, the perfect spouse, kids, dog. The book deal. The movie deal that sprouts from the book deal. The travel that comes with being a famous author. The successful coffeeshop in a tourist trap town. I think about that a lot.

And yet, I don’t avidly work toward it.
